4. Afrobeat: Extended Grooves and Phrase Architecture

Afrobeat is what happens when West African polymetric stacking meets the extended duration of funk and the harmonic sophistication of jazz. Fela Kuti and his drummer Tony Allen built it together in 1960s and 70s Lagos, and its rhythmic vocabulary came out of that partnership rather than from either alone — a way of playing that distributes energy across many bars, with parts fading in and out, each instrument breathing on its own schedule. Allen worked his parts out against Fela’s horn arrangements, and co-attributed the result throughout his own account of it (Allen & Veal 2013).

A typical Afrobeat track runs ten to twenty minutes. The groove is not static for that duration. It evolves. Lanes of percussion enter staggered, creating a gradually thickening texture. Some parts drop out for four bars and return with subtle variation. The effect is hypnotic — the listener loses track of where the “one” is, precisely because multiple independent cycles are defining their own “one” simultaneously.

This is exactly what Poly’s phrase gating was designed to model.

The rhythmic backbone of Afrobeat is the same E(7,12) bell pattern explored in the Sub-Saharan Africa chapter. In the Ewe context, it operates within a 12/8 metric framework. Fela and Tony Allen transplanted it into a straight 4/4 feel drawn from James Brown’s funk, creating a distinctive tension between the ternary bell and the binary groove. In Poly, you achieve this by setting the bell lane to 12 steps at 1/8 subdivision while other lanes run at 16 steps at 1/16, or 8 steps at 1/8. The cross-metric friction between the bell’s 12 and the rhythm section’s 8 or 16 is fundamental to the Afrobeat feel.

Tony Allen described his approach as “playing around the beat rather than on it.” Where a funk drummer drives straight through the pulse, Allen placed his kick drum sparsely and asymmetrically, leaving vast spaces that other instruments could occupy. His hi-hat work was continuous but dynamically varied — a steady stream of eighth notes with shifting accents that created their own polymetric layer.

In Poly terms, this translates to:

  • Kick: Low hit count (3-4 hits across 16 steps), high velocity, no mutation — the kick is deliberate and fixed.
  • Hi-hat: High hit count (12-14 hits across 16 steps), moderate velocity with heavy ghost notes — the hat is continuous but dynamically textured.
  • Snare/cross-stick: Sparse and syncopated, often gated with phrase settings to appear and disappear.

The defining characteristic of Afrobeat drumming is that it breathes. Parts enter and exit over multi-bar cycles, creating an arrangement that thickens and thins without any deliberate compositional decision — each voice simply follows its own phrase schedule (Veal 2000).

In Poly, each lane’s phrase parameters control this breathing:

  • Length sets how many beats the lane plays before resting.
  • Gap sets how many beats of silence follow.
  • Offset staggers the start point so lanes do not all breathe at once.

When you set five or six lanes with different phrase lengths and offsets, the result is an ensemble that self-arranges — some combination of lanes is always active, but the specific combination is always changing.

Lanes 1-3 have no phrase gating — they are the stable foundation that never drops out. The bell, hi-hat, and kick define the groove’s identity. Lanes 4-6 have staggered phrase settings: the snare plays for 8 beats then rests for 4, the shaker plays for 12 and rests for 4 starting 4 beats late, and the conga plays for 6, rests for 6, entering 8 beats after the groove begins.

The offset staggering is critical. If all gated lanes entered and exited simultaneously, the effect would be a crude verse/chorus alternation. With offsets, you get a continuously shifting ensemble texture — sometimes four lanes, sometimes six, sometimes five, always evolving.

Afrobeat in a live context is about gradual intensification — the groove starts sparse and builds over many minutes. Poly’s macros model this trajectory:

  • Density at 0.3-0.4 for the opening establishes a spacious feel. Push it toward 0.7-0.8 as the track develops, and the gated lanes will trigger more frequently, filling the groove.
  • Complexity controls the internal variation within each lane. Keep it low (0.2) during the opening, increase it as the arrangement thickens.
  • Humanize at 0.3-0.5 adds the micro-timing deviations that separate a living groove from a sequenced one. Allen’s playing is usually described as precise but unquantised — a human push and pull against the grid. That is a characterisation rather than a measurement: no timing study of his recordings has been published, and Humanize approximates the effect rather than reproducing anything measured.

The combination of phrase gating for structural breathing and macro automation for gradual intensification gives you a single Poly patch that can sustain a ten-minute Afrobeat jam without repeating itself. The bell holds steady. Everything else breathes around it.

Afrobeat’s genius was recognising that the polymetric stacking of Ewe and Yoruba drumming did not need to stay within traditional ensemble formats. Fela and Allen proved that the same rhythmic principles could organise a funk band, a horn section, and a chorus — all locked to the bell, all breathing independently, all generating complexity through the simplest possible means: independent cycles, evenly distributed.

In Poly, you are working with the same raw material. The bell pattern has not changed since Chapter 2. What has changed is the context — more lanes, longer phrases, staggered entries. The mathematics is identical. The musical result is a different world.
