The Clave Matrix: Afro-Cuban
Companion to Chapter 3: Afro-Cuban. This page assumes you know the tresillo, cinquillo, and the son/rumba clave patterns, and states the alignment rules explicitly. Everything below is summarised from the published scholarship listed under Sources — prior research restated in Poly’s terms, not original theory. The System
Section titled “The System”Cuban popular music is governed by clave: a five-stroke, two-bar (16-pulse) pattern that functions as a matrix rather than a part. Peñalosa’s synthesis of Cuban pedagogy states the core principle: every part in the ensemble is aligned with clave, whether or not clave is being played aloud — alignment is what makes a part correct, and misalignment (“crossed”, cruzado) is a recognised, nameable error, not a stylistic choice (Peñalosa 2009).
The matrix has two halves with opposite characters:
- The three-side (the bar containing three strokes) is the offbeat side — generative, tense, forward-leaning. Its three strokes are the tresillo skeleton, and two of them have names because parts target them: the bombo (second stroke, pulse 3 of 0–15) and the ponche (third stroke, pulse 6).
- The two-side (the bar with two strokes) is the onbeat side — stable, grounded, resolving. Its strokes sit on or beside the main beats.
A groove is “in 3-2” or “2-3” depending on which side the ensemble treats as bar one. Direction is a property of the whole arrangement: melody, bass, percussion all imply the same direction, and one part implying the opposite direction is what “crossed” means precisely.
The Rules
Section titled “The Rules”-
Declare the clave and its direction first. Everything else is defined against it. The clave itself never varies — it is the referent, and like the Ewe bell it takes no ornamentation, no dynamics contour, no mutation. (Note the exact son and rumba claves are non-Euclidean. The Cuban Son Montuno and Rumba Clave presets ship them exactly; the timeline-mode workflow from Chapter 3 is how to build one by hand.)

Match tension to sides. Parts place their offbeat, syncopated activity on the three-side and their grounded, onbeat activity on the two-side. This is the master alignment rule: a part whose busy half sits against the two-side implies the reversed clave and is crossed (Peñalosa 2009; Mauleón 1993).

The bass tumbao avoids the downbeat and targets bombo and ponche. The classic son bass sounds on the bombo (pulse 3) and ponche (pulse 6) of the three-side and sustains across bar lines. Beat-one bass is not neutral — it audibly shifts the style toward son montuno’s older danzón ancestors or toward non-Cuban pop (Mauleón 1993).

Each percussion voice has an archetype part, and the archetype is clave-locked. Cáscara/palito patterns, the timbale bell, the bongó martillo, the conga marcha (tumbao) are fixed patterns with defined clave alignment — learned as wholes, varied only in sanctioned ways (Uribe 1996). The conga marcha places its paired open tones in the second half of each bar, leading across the barline; the quinto (in rumba) is the designated free voice.

The variation budget belongs to one voice at a time. In son: the bongosero moves between martillo and bell, and improvised repiques are momentary. In rumba: the quinto improvises continuously while salidor and tres golpes hold their parts. Either way, the low parts and the clave never join the improvisation.

Density complements across parts, not within them. The composite of clave + cáscara + tumbao + marcha covers most of the 16 pulses with almost no doubled strong accents — parts interlock around each other’s strokes (the cinquillo fills the tresillo’s gaps). When adding a lane, place its accents in composite gaps, not on existing accents.

The feel is a lilt, not straight and not swung. Cuban subdivision sits between straight sixteenths and triplets — roughly 0.2–0.3 on Poly’s Swing parameter — applied ensemble-wide with per-part micro-differences. (See 39 for measured groove-genre timing.)

Crossing is a deliberate, temporary device or an error — nothing in between. Modern timba deliberately “crosses” for sections (gears, bomba sections) and resolves back; what it never does is drift ambiguously. If a part contradicts the matrix, it should be obvious, sectional, and resolved (Washburne 1997 traces the same logic into jazz).
Construction
Section titled “Construction”- Clave lane. 16 steps at 1/16, timeline mode with the exact son clave (hits 0, 3, 6, 10, 12 for 3-2). Decide the direction now (rotate for 2-3).
- Bass/tumbao lane. Hits at bombo and ponche positions; long note durations; no beat-one hit (Rule 3).
- Cáscara lane. The shell pattern, its dense half against the three-side (Rule 2).
- Marcha lane. Conga, mid density, open-tone pair placed late in each bar (Rule 4), ghost floor for the filler strokes between accents.
- One free voice. Quinto-like lane holding the mutation budget (Rule 5). Point that lane’s timeline at the clave and give it a positive strength: its mutation-adds and fills are then drawn toward the clave’s own onsets and its clave-confirming hits are protected from being dropped, so answers land against the stable half rather than across it. A negative strength inverts that, for the deliberate crossings the chapter describes. The clave lane itself stays the referent and is never weighted against anything.
- Feel. Swing 0.2–0.3 ensemble-wide, slight per-lane offsets (Rule 7). Check the composite for doubled accents (Rule 6) and for any lane whose busy half fights the declared direction (Rule 2).

Rotation 14 on the tumbao is not arbitrary. E(6,16) at that rotation sounds on
{1, 3, 6, 9, 11, 14} — nothing on pulse 0, and strikes on the bombo (3) and
the ponche (6). That is Rule 3 stated as positions rather than as a triple the
reader has to unfold.
Lane 1 uses the timeline-mode exact clave, not the E(5,16) approximation — the one-pulse difference at the ponche end of the pattern is precisely where crossing is felt.
What Breaks the Idiom
Section titled “What Breaks the Idiom”- The approximate clave. E(5,16) is bossa’s pattern, not Cuba’s. Shipping it as “clave” is the most common generator error; the fifth hit’s position (13 vs 12) changes the two-side’s meaning.
- Crossed parts. A lane whose accent pattern implies the opposite direction — most often a two-bar part built without deciding which bar is which. Test: mute everything but clave and the suspect lane; if the busy half sits on the two-side, it’s crossed (Rule 2).
- Beat-one bass. Instantly un-Cuban (Rule 3).
- A second free voice. Two lanes improvising simultaneously dissolves the matrix’s figure/ground relationship (Rule 5).
- Straight-grid feel or jazz-triplet swing. Both miss the 0.2–0.3 zone (Rule 7).
