Tala Architecture: Indian Classical
Companion to Chapter 6: Indian Classical. This page states the structural rules of tala-based rhythm explicitly, principally from Hindustani (North Indian) practice with Carnatic parallels noted. Everything below is summarised from the published scholarship listed under Sources — prior research restated in Poly’s terms, not original theory. The System
Section titled “The System”A tala is a cyclic metric structure with named internal architecture: a fixed number of beats (matras), grouped into sections (vibhags), with a hierarchy of marked points — above all sam, beat one, the point of arrival and agreement (Clayton 2000). Unlike a Western time signature, a tala also has a canonical sounded form: the theka, a fixed sequence of drum strokes (bols) that identifies the tala. Tintal’s theka is not “a pattern in 16/4” — it is tintal, in the way E(7,12) is the Ewe bell.
Counterpoint in this system is temporal rather than textural: typically one melodic line and one drummer, whose independence is measured in how far each departs from the cycle while always reconverging at sam. Tension is created by departure — cross-groupings, doubled speeds, phrases that straddle the cycle — and resolved by arrival.
The Rules
Section titled “The Rules”-
The theka is the referent, and its skeleton persists. The tabla player elaborates the theka (filler strokes, flourishes) but its structural bols on the vibhag boundaries remain audible or clearly implied. Abandoning the theka entirely is a marked, sectional event (a solo passage), not ambient behaviour (Kippen 1988).

Sam is the cadence target of everything. Phrases of any length, at any speed, however far they wander, must resolve on sam — arriving early or late is simply wrong, and the audience audibly reacts to a well-landed sam (Clayton 2000). In Poly terms: sam is the convergence point, and all phrase arithmetic works backward from it.

Khali is structural negative space. The cycle’s midpoint region (khali, “empty”) is marked by absence — the tabla’s low drum (bayan) falls silent or is damped, giving the wave shape: full → empty → full. Khali is not quiet sam; it is a different timbre state, and keeping it audible is what makes long cycles navigable.

Speed changes are exact ratios (layakari). Elaboration runs at defined multiples of the base pulse — 2× (dugun), 3× (tigun), 4× (chaugun), and notably 1.5× (adi laya / aad) — never at free tempo. The base cycle length is invariant; only the subdivision multiplies (Clayton 2000).

Cross-groupings are laid over the cycle, then reconciled. A standard tension device is phrasing in units foreign to the tala (groups of 4 over a 7-beat rupak; 3s over tintal’s 4s) — sustained long enough to threaten the meter, then dissolved onto sam (Rule 2). The cross-grouping is a loan, always repaid.

The tihai is the cadential formula, and it is arithmetic. A phrase repeated exactly three times whose final stroke lands on sam:
3 × phrase + 2 × gap ≡ remaining matras (mod cycle). The repetitions must be literal (same phrase, same internal timing); the arithmetic must be exact (Nelson 2008 gives the Carnatic mora equivalent). A tihai whose third statement misses sam by half a beat is not a loose tihai — it is a failed one. -
Theme-and-variation is the improvisation grammar. Tabla solo forms (kaida) state a theme, then vary it by systematic permutation (doubling, substitution, displacement) while preserving its bol material, closing sections with a tihai (Kippen 1988). Variation means transforming a stated theme, not generating unrelated material — mutation with memory, not mutation as noise.

Dynamics mark architecture, not beats. Sam takes weight; khali takes hollowness; vibhag boundaries take clarity. There is no backbeat and no even accent grid — the loudness contour is a map of the cycle.
Construction
Section titled “Construction”- Theka lane. Steps = the tala’s matra count (16 for tintal, 10 for jhaptal, 7 for rupak) at 1/4 or 1/8; timeline mode with the structural strokes; velocity contoured: strongest at step 0 (sam), reduced around the khali region (Rules 1, 3, 8).
- Elaboration lanes at exact ratios. One lane at 2× subdivision (dugun), one at 4× (chaugun), same step count — layered acceleration with the cycle invariant (Rule 4).
- A cross-grouping lane. Step count foreign to the tala (e.g. 6 against 16) — but phrase-gate it so it speaks for a few cycles and falls silent before sam-heavy passages: the loan repaid (Rule 5).
- The tihai. Phrase-gate a lane with
3 × Length + 2 × Gap = one full cycleending at step 0. Worked example over 16 matras: Length 5, Gap 0.5 → 3(5) + 2(0.5) = 16 ✓ (Rule 6). - Feel. No swing. Precision is prized; humanize minimal. All expressive weight goes into the velocity architecture (Rule 8).

Lane 5 is Rule 6’s arithmetic with the numbers filled in. The phrase is 5 matras and the gap between statements is 0.5, so three statements and the two gaps between them occupy 3 × 5 + 2 × 0.5 = 16 matras — one full tintal cycle. The third statement’s final stroke therefore lands on sam, which is the whole point of the formula. Change the gap to 1 and the same phrase needs 17 matras: the tihai overshoots, and by Rule 6 that is not a loose tihai but a failed one.

What Breaks the Idiom
Section titled “What Breaks the Idiom”- A missed sam. Any phrase, fill, or tihai resolving off the convergence point (Rules 2, 6). This is the error the entire system exists to prevent.
- Uniform cycle weight. No khali contour → the cycle loses its internal map (Rules 3, 8).
- Free-tempo layering. Elaboration at non-ratio speeds (e.g. a 1.37× lane) breaks layakari; use exact multiples, including the deliberately tense 1.5× (Rule 4).
- Unresolved cross-groupings. A foreign grouping that never reconciles reads as a mistake rather than tension (Rule 5).
- Approximate tihais. “Three-ish repetitions, roughly landing” — the form’s power is its audible exactness (Rule 6).
